● Approximately half of the 2.3 million inmates are parents with children who are under 18 years old.
● More than 2.7 million children in the U.S. have an incarcerated parent. That is 1 in 28 children.
● About 15-20% of children entering the child welfare system have an
incarcerated parent.
● Nationally, there are more than 120,00 incarcerated mothers and 1.1
million incarcerated fathers who are parents of minor children (ages
0-17).
● Children who witnessed an arrest of a household member were 57%
more likely to have elevated Post Traumatic Stress symptoms (PTSD).
● According to a Rutgers University Study Children of incarcerated
parents are five times more likely to commit suicide.
● Children of incarcerated parents are nine times more likely to dropout of school.
● Children of incarcerated parents are thirty two times more likely to use drugs.
● Children of incarcerated parents are twenty times more likely to have behavioral disorders.
● Children of incarcerated parents are thirty-two times more likely to run away from home.
● Children of incarcerated parents are sixty seven times more likely to be arrested between the ages of 9 years old and twelve years old, according to the Awana Lifeline study.
